Bulgaria home construction permits on track to set new benchmark
The Bulgarian authorities have granted 3,678 permits for the construction of apartment buildings in the half-year period, a pace that could lead to a fresh year-end high, National Statistical Institute (NSI) data shows.

The new buildings will house more than 15,000 flats with a built-up area of over 2 mln sq m.

A total of 2,910 permits were issued in 2003; 3,393 in 2003 and 5,780 in 2004.

Most new buildings are erected in the highly urbanised areas like Sofia, Bourgas, Varna, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad, NSI data shows.

Robust construction has helped the market cool the volatile property prices, brokers commented. Prices are to a large extent influenced by cash inflow from expatriate Bulgarians, most of whom go for downtown three-room flats.
